Craig + Lisa welcome Dominik at Vanderbilt by Nashville Birth Photographer Darcy Ferris

"A Baby Story" debuted on the TLC Channel in 1998 and I was hooked! Each family's story was so unique. Some couples were preparing to have their first child while others were having another child to complete their family. The show never revealed the actual birth of a baby, probably due to legal reasons and modesty. However, they did show the preparation for the baby, the mother laboring, and what life was like after they brought their bundle of joy home. Pregnancy and the birthing process is truly a miracle.

Like most photography, birth photography has found its place in the world. It's a very intimate type of photography. Emotions are at their rawest and there's no recreating a moment. I knew I wanted to capture a birth, but the question remained "who" and "when"?

I had photographed Craig + Lisa's maternity session in July, but I never imagined that I would get to be a part of their baby's birth. I was over the moon excited! Most birth photographers reserve two weeks either side of the baby's due date to be 'on call'. Since their first little girl decided to arrive five weeks early, Craig + Lisa  had no idea what to expect with their little boy. At 5am, the day after Lisa's due date, my cell phone rang. Lisa's water had just burst and soon Dominik would make his appearance. None of us were aware of how soon that would be. I told her to call me when they left for the hospital since I live 45 minutes one way and they live 40 minutes the other way. At 7am the phone rang again and this time Lisa was breathing heavy, real heavy. They were on their way to the hospital and she said she didn't know if they'd make it in time or if this was going to be a car delivery. I jumped out of bed, threw some clothes on and hit the road. It was rush hour with bumper to bumper traffic. I claimed that HOV lane like it was my best friend and kept making up stories in my head in case the cop pulled me over. I parked, ran to Labor and Delivery and found baby Dominik laying on his Mama's chest. She had delivered him before they even got her checked in, ten minutes prior to my arrival. In all honestly, I was disappointed that I missed the actual birth, but relieved that Lisa had made it to the hospital and everyone was doing great! I got to spend the day capturing Dominik's first eight hours of life. I felt beyond blessed! This little boy is so loved and is the first grandson.

Dominic meets his Grandmas and Grandma's reaction when she hears the birth story of how Lisa almost didn't make it to the hospital.

The first Grandson and the one who will carry on the family name.

Craig and Lisa's Maternity Session at Long Hunter State Park.

The love between this husband and wife, Craig and Lisa, is honest. It's magical. It's romantic. It's emotional. It's real. Lisa is naturally beautiful, but the way Craig looks at her makes her glow even more. Every couple's pregnancy is special, but this pregnancy for Craig and Lisa is super special. Craig has three beautiful daughters from his first marriage. He and Lisa have a beautiful little girl, Sophia, who is two. Their newest addition is going to get so much sister love, because IT'S A BOY!

I was so honored to photograph this growing family and cannot wait to meet their little one soon.

Eric + Kristina's Lifestyle Session at Portland Brew & Sevier Park in Nashville, Tennessee.

I had the honor of documenting Eric + Kristina's wedding last month at Centennial Park in Nashville. It was so sweet and intimate. After they got back from their dream honeymoon in Greece, (oh how I wish I could have been a stowaway on that trip) they decided to do a lifestyle session with their children... Daisy, Dylan, and Jagger. Did I mention their kids are actually four-legged fur babies? They are the most adorable!

We started in the popular 12th South District where there is a ton of hipster stores and trendy restaurants. Portland Brew looked cozy, so they ordered some drinks and grabbed a table. It was insanely hot and humid outside, so we enjoyed some time inside. Then, we headed down the road to Sevier Park. This is where their fur babies joined us. I had an absolute blast capturing this family!

Thanksgiving is a huge time for family to get together from near and far away. That's what was happening at the Johnson Home. They were eager to do a family shoot as a tribute to their parents. I was honored to be documenting their family (plus a dog) on such a beautiful fall day in Tennessee. We hauled out some old antique chairs, gathered everyone around and had some great laughs. Their property is absolutely gorgeous tucked in down a long gravel road.

I've know Tracie since kindergarden and it's been so exciting to watch her family form and grow over the years. I am always honored when she asks me to capture her family memories. Each child has such a big and unique personality. Our session theme was touring Grandma and Grandpa's garden + treehouse time. Here are some of favorite images from the day.

Zimmerman Lifestyle Session by Nashville Family Photographer.

Family lifestyle sessions are my favorite type of sessions to capture, because it's life unscripted. When the Zimmerman family contacted me and told me about their '2015 Grandkids Spectacular', I was beyond excited to capture the day! The Zimmerman Grandparents started a tradition last year with their grandchildren that involves a morning hike and creek walk at Beaman Park. Beaman Park is located north of Nashville, Tennessee, and has gorgeous trails, scenic overlooks, and waterways to explore. I arrived, met the troop of grandkids and began exploring with them. It wasn't long before one kiddo had a skinned knee and needed tears dried, while another had rocks that just wouldn't stay out of his shoes. Their were bridges to cross, water to splash in and frogs to try and catch. I had an absolute blast capturing this beautiful family. I'm already looking forward to next year!

I absolutely love capturing families, especially kids, in their natural surroundings. I met the Vogelsang family a few years back and have enjoyed watching their little girl and boy grow. Winter is such a beautiful time of year and I was honored when they invited me into their beautiful home to capture some Christmas memories.

In August I was in Wisconsin to capture a wedding and while I was there I was blessed to be asked to capture little "K". She has gotten so big and bright since capturing her last time! She's four and thinks she knows everything. Her and I spent quite a bit of time in the backyard exploring. She taught me how to 'properly' use the swing set, where corn grows and that it's ok that there are dead worms in the sandbox.

She's ONE Year Old in Columbia, TN

She's ONE Year Old in Columbia, TN

Turning one year old is a BIG deal! It's classified as the end of 'babyhood'. It's when he | she unconsciously realizes that growing up comes with pretty papered presents, celebration, multicolored sugary cake, and lots of family and friends that spoil. (mostly Grandmas and Grandpas) Since I'm an only child, I know nothing about that. Ha! This little girl, Ella, stole my heart with her bright tutu, zebra stripped leggings and those adorable big blue eyes.

I met this beautiful family a few years back. Ginnie is a math tutor who started her own business, Top Class Tutoring. A little fact is that Ginnie tutored me through my last two Advanced Algebra College Courses. I couldn't have done it without her! Ryan is a complete computer geek, which basically means he's real smart too. Their little bundle, Cora, arrived a little over two and a half years ago on none other than April Fool's Day. She's quite the little princess and has grown so much since these photos were taken in December. (Yes, I'm a little behind)

I was thrilled when Ryan asked me to capture his family for a Christmas gift to his parents. Here are a few images from that crisp, but unusually warm day.
